How to Take and Give Feedback to Your Co-workers - The MuseHow to Take and Give Feedback to Your Co-workers I always strive to be a levelheaded, open-minded, and poised professional.But often, when I receive unsolicited feedback from my co-workers, all I want to do is channel my inner five-year-old with an exaggerated eye roll and the ever-sassy retort, Youre not the boss of meMature, I know.But feedback from your peers is a whole different ballgame than feedback from your manager. Because its from people at the same professional level as you, it can feel more like a blow to your ego, or even a personal attack on your abilities.But to help your department produce the best work possible, and to constantly push yourself to improve, you cant keep ignoring that constructive criticism. And if you see sohonigweinhing that could be improved, you also need to be able to voice your feedback respectfully. To do that, here are some tips to reframe your perspective and learn how to effectively t ake- and give- peer feedback. Take it or Leave ItFirst, its important to realize that its not your job to give your co-workers feedback, and its not their responsibility to provide it to you. Thats the job of your manager.The difference is, because its not coming from your boss, technically youre free to take your co-workers advice or choose to disregard it. At the same time, that goes for them, too. You may suggest they do something differently, but that doesnt mean they have to change their ways. That doesnt mean you can- or should- ignore co-worker feedback. But it does give you the freedom to consider it carefully before implementing it. Which brings me toEvaluate it ObjectivelyIf you have the same urge to roll your eyes at a co-workers feedback as I do, you have to tread lightly- because that may be a sign that youre mixing your personal feelings with your professional responsibilities. In my case, there was a brand new team member who was giving me suggestions for how to write an absatzwirtschaft campaign email a little differently. Instead of considering her advice without bias, I factored in all sorts of other personal feelings- that she was new and relatively inexperienced, and we werent exactly friends. If so, making the change is going to benefit everyone involved- yourself included.Be Willing to CompromiseAs a marketing writer, I- as you would expect- do quite a bit of writing for my companys website. However, I am not, by any means, an expert in SEO. When I first started writing blog posts, my co-worker, the departments digital marketing specialist, constantly gave me constructive criticism regarding my content and headlines. Immediately, I took offense. I put a lot of effort into carefully crafting my posts and titles, but time after time, hed approach me with suggestions to make my writing more SEO-friendly. But to me, optimizing that content meant compromising the quality of the work with less effective headlines and distracting keywordsBut at the end of the day, I had to take a step back and figure out how to compromise. After all, I was the writer, but he was the expert in SEO. To make our end product successful, we had to work together. So, I asked him to take some time to go over some basic SEO rules with me- that way I could more effectively weave keywords into my writing and formulate effective headlines from the get-go. In return, if I felt strongly about certain elements of my content that I didnt want to change, hed agree to leave them unaltered. You may not agree with every bit of feedback you get- but with an open mind, you may be able to find a way to make it work.Balance the Negative With the PositiveThis isnt to suggest that you should embrace my personal pet peeve of the compliment sandwich, where you insert constructive criticism in between two positive comments. Everyone sees through that approach, and eventually, every compliment you dole out is going to be met with a raised eyebrow- because surely theres a but coming right behind it. What I do mean is that if you choose to give your co-workers feedback, it shouldnt be all bad, all the time. If youre going to dish out some constructive criticism and suggest ways for them to improve, you also need to take notice of the things they do well- and readily point them out (with no constructive criticism strings attached). By doing this, youll create a positive team culture, where positive reinforcement is valued j ust as much as constructive criticism.Learning to take feedback from your peers can be a challenging and humbling experience, but with an open mind, you can use it to drive your department- and yourself- to new heights. Do you regret not going to university? What are the benefits of not going to university?Jane WoodcockI was a headstrong 16-ye ar-old when I left school after O levels and dont think I even considered going to university. Regrets possibly in terms of widening horizons, but none in terms of where my career path has led me since. I doubt that I could have achieved more than I have even had I attended university.The benefit of not going to university and instead studying for legal executive examinations while in employment in legal practice is that the knowledge gained on a practical level from working files and from working with and being mentored by experienced staff is invaluable and something that simply cannot be achieved through the university route.SWWhat alternative route did you take to get into law?JWAs I say, I studied for the Institute of Legal Executives examinations, qualifying pretty quickly as an associate and then going on to take the fellowship examinations, which at the time were said to be equivalent to degree standard examinations, and I presume still are. I got a distinction or two and b ecause I was too young to be made a fellow. There was a qualifying employment period of five years. I think had to wait about 18 months to get the formal title.SWWhat subjects did you take at school? Did these help you towards a role in law?JWI attended a grammar school. Standard maths, English, and science-based subjects, history and geography, and we had Latin classes although I cant pretend they have particularly shaped my life since. If anything, I probably excelled in English and history, which probably had a bearing. Being blessed with something of a photographic memory also helped a bit.Jane WoodcockSWHave you had any on-the-job training? If so, what did it involve and how has it prepared you for your role?JWAs above, I had on-the-job-training from the beginning and eventually got the hang of it well enough to train other people.SWWhat are the biggest challenges that you have faced in your career so far?JWDifficult question. I have been qualified for more than30 years now At the beginning, the biggest challenge was to gain acceptance, as a female, into the world of civil litigation, which was very much a male domain. From memory, there were about 33 separate firms practicing in Hull at the time, and only myself and one other female working in the civil litigation field at anything like a fee-earner level. Times have changed very considerably since then, and women may well now outweigh men in this field.The challenge was therefore to gain the acknowledgement and respect of not only fellow litigators, but also counsel and judges which I think I did.SWWhere do you see yourself in five years time?JWRetired and sitting in the sunSWDo you have any role models or mentors who have inspired your career choices so far?JWI qualified as a fellow while working for a firm where I did defense work (i.e., the opposite of what I do now). I ended up staying for 13 years. I worked with/for a guy called John Bryers. Without exaggeration, I would not be where I am now wit hout the guidance this man gave me. Without exaggeration, he is probably the kindest and most genuine person I have ever met.So, I got lucky, and in a sense, luck does play a part in this type of career being in the right place at the right time, someone spotting your talent, landing that one case that develops into something that makes legal precedent.SWWhat key skills do you think you need for your role?JWAn eye for detail, good memory, good knowledge and understanding of the law, patience, the ability tobea good listener and good communicator, common sense, a sense of humor, and the ability to withstand stress very significant stress at times and be prepared to lose sleep in the literal sense.Jane WoodcockSWWhat advice would you give someone aspiring to a career in law who has not been to university and is not planning to do so?JWThink about getting work placement in a firm. Think about taking even a very junior role in a firm to get a foot in the door. Many legal executives h ave started their careers in secretarial roles or similar.Also, just to put matters into perspective, there is very little indeed that a fellow of the Institute cannot do which a solicitor can including being a partner in a firm and having a right of audience in the higher courts.

The deadline to register is May 31.The IDSC is a venue for students to showcase their knowledge and creativity while addressing a broad spectrum of academic, industrial, manufacturing and humanitarian challenges. The simulations entered by students should enable the prediction of models capturing systemic or service behavior for the needs of product or service design, maintenance, qualification or certificat ion in all areas of engineering innovation. The 12 finalists chosen by a reviewing committee will present their entries to a panel of judges at the ASME 2014 International Design Engineering Technical Conference and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC/CIE), to be held Aug. 17-20 in Buffalo, N.Y. Two $2,000 prizes will be awarded in each of the IDSCs three categories custom, open and commercial simulations. Other prizes include $1,000 honoraria and complimentary five-year ASME memberships for selected team faculty member advisors, as well as travel subsidies for semi-finalists to attend the Challenge finals in Buffalo. For example, look at your life right now.Most people look at their current income as a product of their situation or capability. In reality, your current income is based on how much you believe you need.If you needed more, youd make more. If you needed to make an extra $5 0,000 in the next 6 months because the situation or your dreams demanded it, youd be surprised what you could come up with. Necessity is the mother of invention.Your current level of income reflects the size of your reasons. Most people have this backward. They work so they can make money. When you have compelling reasons, you make money so you can do more work. The work is sweet because you have very specific and powerful reasons for doing it.If you can make your reasons bigger, more exciting, and personally meaningful to you, then youll departure to conceptualize clear goals.The bigger your reasons, the bigger your needs. If you have big goals, youll need more resources, a team of people to help you, and probably lots more income.According to marketing legend, Jay Abraham, there is zero correlation between being good at something and making money. There are a lot of very talented people who dont have enough reasons to take their work and life to the next level.Although there is ze ro correlation between being good and making money, there is a direct correlation between marketing and making money. The more compelling your reasons become for achieving a particular goal, the more willing youll be to get the word out and to succeed.How big do you want to play?How deep are your reasons to achieve your vorstellung?How compelling are the rewards?How willing are you to learn and become?You cannot be motivated without a clear vision and reasons for that vision. But clarifying that vision takes work and patience. Something that you feel is your mission and purpose in life. In fact, you are the domain. You create, sell, implement, do and are responsible for everything.Stage 2 - THE PIONEER You have one to a small handful of employees. You begin to delegate but are leise approving everything that comes in and out of your company.Stage 3 - THE RINGLEADER It can feel like a circus at times You begin building small teams (e.g., admin, custom service, marketing). At this stage, you are really getting clear on your vision. You are leading team meetings and developing systems and processes. Youre spread way too thin. People are still not clear on what their roles are.Stage 4 - THE CO-CREATOR You begin to recruit or promote team lead ers to co-create the solutions and brainstorm the new ideas and opportunities. Your people become just as committed as you to your vision and begin asking How can we delight our customers? How can we innovate? How can we increase revenue?Stage 5 - THE VISIONARY At this stage of the game, they dont need you. You have great people in place who are devoted and committed to the vision. You step back from meetings and stop providing your two cents. You let go of the day-to-day and focus exclusively on the big picture.It doesnt matter if youre an entrepreneur or not. This 5-stage framework is very instructive.At each stage, you need a new gameplan. If you dont have the gameplan of going from Stage 1 to Stage 2, then you wont get there.Lots of people imagine themselves at Stage 5 when they dont even know how to get out of Stage 1 or 2.Whatever your goal is, you need to develop a plan. You need strategies to get from where you are to where you want to go. Once you ascend to a certain level , youll need to re-define the WHY - your reasons for what youre doing. They should get bigger and bigger along the way because if it continues to grow, it will involve increasing numbers of people. It will also impact increasing numbers of people through the work you do.Without plans and people, you cant be motivated. You cant achieve big goals. Having a WHY is not enough. You then need clear plans and strategies for reaching that goal. You need to truly believe the strategies (and people) will actually get the job done.Which brings us to this final point - you need to believe YOU can execute this.It doesnt matter if the WHY is powerful. It doesnt matter if you have all of the best strategies. If you dont believe you can execute, then you will self-sabotage.You need to believe you can execute the plans and strategies youve developed. You need to believe you can lead the mission - if leadership is required for what you seek to do.You need to be completely committed to becoming whatever it takes to achieve your dreams. If your dreams are big, you will be required to change. As Albert Einstein put it, The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.Youll need to expand and grow into your vision. And actually, thats one of the primary reasons to have a huge vision - to transform you into the type of person who can make it happen.Yes, you can expand and grow. You can develop capacities and skills. You can adapt to challenging circumstances and do stuff youve never done before.You can become comfortable in new and unknown territories.You can become a person of confidence and faith who is willing to put their stake in their ground.You get to this level of conviction by investing fulling into what you believe in. You need to get clear on what matters to you.You need to care enough about your dreams to grow beyond your petty fears and self-image. Youll need to get good at marketing and leadership.
